Commissions will be opening soon, but you may reserve a spot now!

Summertime is coming up soon (for me, that's June 16th!) and that means I'm gearing up for commissions. And writing up this new snazzy commissions sheet for you all to see!

Because I'm not quite off school yet, but I'd like to get this show on the road, I'm going to open up some slots for reservation. That is, if you're interested in commissioning me and really want to make sure you get me before other people do, you can send me a note and get a spot on this list! You'll be the first to get commissions from me this summer. I'll contact you when I'm ready to begin working, and if you send the down payment within a week, we'll be all set and ready to go!

If you've ever taken a gander around my gallery, there are a lot of nifty things. But if I listed all of them here, that'd be a bit overwhelming! So if you've got an idea that you think I could do, send me a note, and we'll se if we can't figure something out.

Policies

:bulletblue:- Payment -:bulletblue:
All prices are in USD. I prefer to be paid in advance, or half up-front  and half after the commission is finished. If you're looking for a very large commission, like perhaps a very large needlefelt, I'm also open to payment plans over the course of the project, complete with WIP pictures at milestones in the work. Provided, of course, such payment plans are agreed upon in advance.

I take payment through PayPal or Etsy.

:bulletblue:- Delivery -:bulletblue:
- Digital: -
Delivered online once fully paid for, either through dA or e-mail. .PNG and .PSD are my preferred file types.
- Artisan: -
The buyer must pay the price of shipping. I live in Oregon, USA, and generally ship through USPS. Delivery confirmation necesarry. Insurance is optional, although many USPS packaging services come with a gratis $100 insurance. Items will not be shipped until payment is completed and delivery is paid for.

:bulletblue:- A Note on Pricing Policy -:bulletblue:
Generally, I try to price needlefelts as best I can. That said, estimating the amount of hours that a project will take is a tricky business, especially when I aim to make every piece as perfect as it can be. This means, often, my quotes end up being too low. If it turns out that my original quote for a project was too low, I will NOT charge you any more than the original quote. But I can't guarantee that similar things will cost the same amount in the future. Thank you for your understanding.

Your needle felts are simply amazing. They always looks so smooth! I always end up with a ton of fly aways on mine, and I've been considering getting one of those sweater pill removers to help with that. Do you think that would be useful? What do you use to smooth down the fuzz?

Thank you! But, actually, I probably have a lot more fuzz than you. It is simply that my creations are larger on average, I believe. So the fuzz doesn't "show up" as much because it is smaller in relation to the whole. See the close-up of Wolf's mouth, here? [link] He's pretty small, so it shows up somethin' fierce on him.

So the fuzz seems less important when they're big, or if you're good at taking photos.

Some needlefelters swear by a final coat of wetfelting, which I've not yet had the courage to attempt.

Sweater pill removers might help. I can't immediately imagine how, since the nature of felt is that all of those flyaways are tangled into the creation. (As opposed to pills, which have generally wiggled free of their origin.) If you got an electric shaver, now, that might be of use. Or it might clog up. Same presumably goes for a modern regular razor blade. You might consider trying a "ye olde Englishe razor"-style thing, since that won't clog, but on softer felts it's likely not to have the resistance it needs. But hey, if you got one lyin' around that people won't miss... Worth a shot, right?

Generally, if I'm really hellbent on getting rid of flyaways, the only way is to felt like there's no tomorrow. I believe... ~GlassCamel's transformer needlefelts are a really good example of how firm and dense felt can be.

Part of the reason I am able to trim down on the flyaways by felting down is because I start with a wire armature, which gives me something concrete to felt to. If you're only felting against a needlefelt pad, at a certain point with small things you may only be exaggerating the fuzz by poking fibers out the other side. This becomes especially noticeable at points and places you want to keep very thin, but it can happen anytime your needle can jab through your entire creation.

More often I simply don't have the energy to care, and whatever fuzz remains is there and I'm not getting rid of it.

You could also try scissors. That'd probably work just fine, albeit tedious.

Oh yeah, I hadn't considered that larger felts would look less fuzzy, oops :3
A good bit of my creations are on armatures, but most of my fuzz stems from putting the colored wool on the base. Like, my base of core wool generally isn't too fuzzy. I've considered trying to get something called a "crown" needle because I've heard they only felt very shallow, and it seems like it would be good to felt down top color without potentially changing the shape of the felt, but it's been hard to find one.

I was thinking of using an electric shaver kind of pill remover, like, one you can turn on that has rotating blades beneath a metal grate, but still I'm not sure how effective it would be. I've tried scissors, and it does get rid of the fuzz, but then the fuzz just clings to the felt :/

I think that, unless something I make is incredibly small, I won't worry about it. I'm trying to appeal to the plushie crowd for commissions (since I'm mostly making ponies) and I figured if it looked a little more like fabric more people would be wanting one, but most people probably understand what needle felting is, and how the fuzz is slightly unavoidable.

But thank you so much for the advice :D

Oh! The putting down color?

Mainly I have color in like... loose rolled-up bits. I buy this stuff from a local store, and they get their stuff from Holland. All of the fibers are aligned into what roughly makes up an EXTREMELY loose and large yarn which is then wound into a ball.

Then I just kinda flatten the thread out and wind it around my creation. Because the thread is aligned parallel to the surface of my creation, at that point, very little generally comes off as fuzz.

If you can find roving that's already in a sort of... string, maybe you can try that?

The main thing is that most needlefelt creations shouldn't be aimed at use for kids. So you should be alright.
