Description

"But that isn't a unicorn," the child whined. They hid behind their aunt's legs, even though the beast was dozens of meters away. It was in the middle of a meal, ripping chunks of flesh off of a once-antelope.

The older woman chuckled. "I suppose it isn't what comes to mind when you hear that word, no. But the people who first saw these creatures only told of their majesty. They are very intelligent, you know; if you are kind, they repay you in turn."
The child furrowed their brow and bit their lip. They'd thought unicorns were pristinely white, not blood-spattered brown.

And never, not once in a million years, had they though unicorns would be nearly so large.

So when I was younger, in middle school, I remember reading an anthology of short stories about unicorns. I don't remember much of it, but one of the short stories had always stuck with me. In it, a unicorn horn was not white, but rather tri-colored: black at the base, white in the center, and red at the point.

Red, because the horn was stained with the blood of the unjust: for only if you were worthy could you survive a unicorn's strike through your heart.

And shiver me timbers if I don't FUDGING LOVE the idea of carnivorous, vigilante-justice unicorns.

I used a lot of species as touchstones; primarily Blue Wildebeasts and Elk. Creature design is fun! I should do it more often.

ahhh this sketch of a unicorn is amazing. I haven't heard about these different variations of these creatures before? If you ever remember the book or have a link to a website on it I'd love to read about it!
